For many years I've wanted to photograph loons with their chicks, especially riding on the back of mom. Timing is everything though in nature and with my other travels I always seemed to be in the wrong place when the chicks were young enough to hitch a ride. This summer though with Covid I was around and made it a point to keep track of the loons on the lakes around my cabin in Rusk County, WI. I was fortunate to get images from four pairs of loons with their chicks. All images were taken from my kayak. It took some time for them to accept my presence. Each pair reacted differently. One pair never let me get close to the chicks. Yet another pair seemed so comfortable they left me with their chick as they went off feeding on several occasions. We'll see how my timing is next summer.
