North of Duluth is one of the premier birding sites in the country, Sax-Zim Bog. During the winter it consistently has the largest concentration of Great Gray Owls, Northern Hawk Owls and other boreal species found in the country. I visited twice this winter and was pleased each time. In late December we saw 5 GGOWs and 2 NHOWs. In February I only encountered 1 GGOW and 2 NHOWs. A boreal owl had been seen recently in the area but hid from me.

Besides the owls there are always great opportunities for songbirds, Pine Grosbeaks, Evening Grosbeaks, White-winged Crossbills, Boreal Chickadees, Black-backed Woodpeckers to name a few.

If you're into birds its a must stop. When you go be sure to stop at the visitor center operated by the Friends of Sax-Zim Bog. They are extremely helpful in directing you to locations where birds are being seen and have a great map of the area. Be sure to leave donation they are a non-profit dedicated to protecting this unique area. Check out my "Sax-Zim" gallery for more images.
